The fall of man

1Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the wild animals that the Lord God had made. And she asked the woman, “Is this really what God said, ‘Do not eat any fruit from the trees of the garden’?”

2The woman replied to the serpent, “We can eat fruit from the trees in the garden,

3but God said, 'Do not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor touch it; otherwise you will die' “.

4The serpent said to the woman: “They will certainly not die!

5God knows that in the day you eat it, your eyes will be opened, and you, like God, will know good and evil.”

6When the woman saw that the tree seemed pleasant to the taste, was attractive to the eyes and, moreover, desirable for obtaining discernment from it, she took some of its fruit, ate it and gave it to her husband, who also ate.

7Their eyes opened and they realized they were naked; Then they gathered fig leaves to cover themselves.

8When the man and his wife heard the footsteps of the Lord God as he walked through the garden as the day breeze blew, they hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

9But the Lord God called the man, asking, “Where are you?”

10And he answered, “I heard your footsteps in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; That’s why I hid.”

11And God asked, “Who said you were naked? Have you eaten fruit from the tree from which I forbade you to eat?”

12The man said, “It was the woman you gave me as a companion who gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

13The Lord God then asked the woman: “What have you done?”
The woman replied, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14Then the Lord God declared to the serpent:
“Once you've done that,
damn are you
among all domestic herds
and among all the wild animals!
On your belly you will crawl,
and dust he will eat all the days of his life.

15I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
among your descendants
and her descendant;
it will hurt your head,
and you will bruise his heel.”

16To the woman, he declared:
“I will greatly multiply
your suffering during pregnancy;
with suffering you will give birth to children.
Your wish will be for your husband,
and he will dominate her.”

17And to the man he declared:
“Since you listened to your wife
and ate the fruit of the tree
which I commanded you
not eat,
Cursed is the ground because of you;
with suffering you
will feed on it
every day of your life.

18She will give you thorns and weeds,
and you will have to feed
of field plants.

19With the sweat of your face
you will eat your bread,
until he returns to earth,
since it was taken from her;
because you are dust,
and to dust he will return.”

20Adam gave his wife the name Eve, as she would be the mother of all humanity.

21The Lord God made clothes of skin and clothed Adam and his wife with them.

22Then the Lord God said, “Now the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Therefore, he must not be allowed to take the fruit of the tree of life and eat it, and live forever.”

23That's why the Lord God sent him away from the garden of Eden to cultivate the soil from which he was taken.

24After driving out the man, he placed cherubim and a moving flaming sword to the east of the Garden of Eden, guarding the way to the tree of life.
