Then Isaac called Jacob, gave him his blessing, and commanded him, “Do not marry a Canaanite woman.

Go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel, your maternal grandfather, and marry one of the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.

May the Almighty God bless you, make you prolific and multiply your descendants, so that you may become a community of people.

May he give you and your descendants the blessing of Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land in which you live as a foreigner, the land given by God to Abraham.”

Then Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan-aram, to Laban, son of Bethuel the Aramean, and brother of Rebekah, mother of Jacob and Esau.

Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan-aram to choose a wife there and that, when blessing him, he had given him the order not to marry a Canaanite woman.

He also learned that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and gone to Paddan-aram.

Esau then realized that his father Isaac did not approve of Canaanite women,

He went to Ishmael's house and took Mahalath, sister of Nebaioth, daughter of Ishmael, son of Abraham, in addition to the other wives he already had.

Jacob left Beersheba and went to Haran.

Arriving at a certain place, he stopped to spend the night, because the sun had already set. Taking one of the stones from there, he used it as a pillow and lay down.

And he had a dream in which he saw a ladder resting on the ground; its top reached to the heavens, and the angels of God ascended and descended on it.

Next to him stood the Lord, who said to him: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you lie.

Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and they will spread to the West and to the East, to the North and to the South. All the peoples of the earth will be blessed through you and your descendants.

I am with you and will take care of you, wherever you go; and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until you do what I promised you.”

When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, but I did not know it! “

He was afraid and said: “This place is fearful! It is none other than the house of God; This is the gate of heaven.”

The next morning, Jacob took the stone he had used as a pillow, stood it up like a pillar, and poured oil on its top.

And he called the name of that place Bethel, although the city was formerly called Luz.

Then Jacob made a vow, saying: “If God will be with me, will take care of me on this journey I am taking, will provide me with food and clothing,

and bring me back safely to my father's house, then the Lord will be my God.

And this stone that I have placed as a pillar today will serve as God's sanctuary; and of all that you give me I will certainly give you a tenth.”
