Deuteronomy 2 – Verses from Deuteronomy 2 from the book of Deuteronomy in the Bible.

So we turned around and set out into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea, as the Lord had commanded me. And for many years we walked around the mountains of Seir.

Then the Lord said to me:

“You have walked a long time around these mountains; Now walk north.

And tell the people: You are passing through the territory of your brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, but be very careful.

Do not provoke them, for I will not give you any part of their land, not even a foot's space. I have already given Esau possession of the mountains of Seir.

You will pay them in silver for the food they eat and the water they drink.”

For the Lord your God has blessed you in everything you have done. He watched over you on your journey through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything.

Thus we pass by our brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We left the route of the Arabah, Elath and Ezion-geber. We returned and took the Moab desert route.

Then the Lord said to me, “Do not disturb the Moabites or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any part of their land, for I have already given the region of Ar to the descendants of Lot.”

(In ancient times the Emim lived in this land; they were a strong and numerous people, tall as the Anakites.

Like the Anakites, they were also considered Rephaim, but the Moabites called them Emim.

Also in Seir the Horites lived in ancient times. But the descendants of Esau drove them out and exterminated them and settled in their place, just as Israel did with the land that the Lord gave them. )

“Now get up! Cross the valley of Zered.” So we crossed the valley.

Thirty-eight years passed from the time we left Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the valley of Zered, until the entire generation of men of war perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them.

The hand of the Lord fell upon them and finally eliminated them completely from the camp.

After all the people's warriors had died,

 the Lord said to me:

“You are about to pass through the territory of Moab, through the region of Ar,

and they will come close to the border of the Ammonites. Do not be hostile to them, for I will not give you any part of the land of the Ammonites, for I have given it to the descendants of Lot.”

(This region was also considered the land of the Rephaim, who lived there in the past. The Ammonites called them Zanzumins.

They were strong, numerous and tall like the Anakim. The Lord exterminated them, and the Ammonites drove them out and settled in their place.

The Lord did the same to Esau's descendants living in Seir when he exterminated the Horites before them. Esau's descendants expelled them and settled in their place to this day.

This was also what happened to the Aveus, who lived in villages close to Gaza; the Caphtorites, coming from Caphtor, destroyed them and settled in their place. )

“Go now and cross the Arnon River. See that I have given Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land into your hands. Start the occupation, go to war against him.

This very day I will begin to instill dread and fear of you in all people under heaven. When they hear of your fame, they will tremble and be distressed.”

From the wilderness of Kedemote I sent messengers to Sihon king of Heshbon, offering peace and saying:

Let us pass through your land. We will only go by road; we will not turn to the right or to the left.

For silver you will sell us both the food we eat and the water we drink. Just let us walk by,

as did the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar. So I will come to the Jordan, and through it to the land that the Lord our God is giving us.

But Sihon, king of Heshbon, would not let us pass; for the Lord, your God, made his spirit obstinate and hardened his heart, to deliver him into your hands, as it is today.

The Lord said to me, “I am handing Sihon and his land over to you. Start the occupation, take possession of his land! “

Then Sihon went out to battle against us in Jaza with all his army.

But the Lord our God handed him over to us, and we defeated him, his sons, and his entire army.

On that occasion we conquered all their cities and completely destroyed them, killing men, women and children, leaving no survivors.

We take as prey only the animals and the spoils of the cities we conquer.

From Aroer, by the river Arnon, and the city that is in the same valley, as far as Gilead, there was no city with walls too high for us. The Lord, our God, has given us everything.

Only the land of the Ammonites did you not approach, that is, the entire length of the valley of the River Jabbok, and the cities of the hill country, as the Lord our God had commanded.
