Deuteronomy 1 – Verses from Deuteronomy 1 from the book of Deuteronomy in the Bible.

Deuteronomy 1 – Verses of Deuteronomy 1 of the book of Deuteronomy of the Bible.

These are the words spoken by Moses to all Israel in the wilderness, east of the Jordan, in the Arabah, opposite Shuph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Di-Zahab.

In eleven days you will go from Horeb to Kadesh-Barnea by the route of the mountains of Seir.

In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses proclaimed to the Israelites all the commands of the Lord concerning them.

This was after he defeated Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and in Edrei he defeated Og, king of Bashan, who lived in Ashteroth.

East of the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses took it upon himself to expound this law:

The Lord our God said to us in Horeb: “You have stayed long enough on this mountain.

Set up camp and advance towards the Amorite mountains; They go to all the neighboring peoples in the Arabah, in the mountains, in Shephelah, in the Negev and along the coast, to the land of the Canaanites and to Lebanon, as far as the great river, the Euphrates.

“I set this land before you. Go in and take possession of the land that the Lord swore to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and to their descendants.”

At that time I told them: “I can't take you alone.

The Lord your God made you multiply so that today you are as numerous as the stars in the sky.

May the Lord, the God of your ancestors, multiply you a thousand times more and bless you, as he promised you!

But how can I bear your problems, your burdens and your disputes alone?

Choose wise, discerning, and experienced men from each of your tribes, and I will make them your chiefs.”

You told me this was a good proposal.

Then I called together the chiefs of the tribes, wise and experienced men, and appointed them as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of ten, as well as officers for each tribe.

At that time I commanded your judges: “Consider the issues of your brothers and judge with justice, not only the issues between your countrymen but also between an Israelite and a foreigner.

Do not be partial in judgment! Serve both the small and the large. Do not be intimidated by anyone, as the verdict belongs to God. Bring me the most difficult cases and I will listen to them.

At that time I ordered them everything they should do.”

Then, as the Lord our God had commanded us, we left Horeb and went to the mountains of the Amorites, passing through that immense and terrible desert that you saw, and so we arrived at Kadesh-Barnea.

Then I said to them, “You have come to the mountain range of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us.

See, the Lord your God sets this land before you. Go into the land and take possession of it, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, told you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.”

You all came to tell me: “Let us send some men ahead of us on a mission to reconnoitre the region, so that they can show us which way we will go up and which cities we will go to”.

The suggestion seemed good to me; That's why I chose twelve of you, one man from each tribe.

They ascended the mountainous region, reached the valley of Eshcol and explored it.

They brought some fruits from the region, with the following report: “This land that the Lord our God is giving us is good”.

But you did not want to go, and you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God.

They complained in their tents, saying, “The Lord hates us; That is why he brought us out of Egypt to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites and destroy us.

Where will we go? Our countrymen discouraged us when they said: The people are stronger and taller than we; the cities are large, with walls that reach to the sky. We saw the Anakites there.”

Then I said to them: Do not be terrified; do not be afraid of them.

The Lord your God, who is going ahead of you, will fight for you, as he did in Egypt, before your own eyes.

Also in the desert you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way they traveled until they reached this place.

Yet you did not trust in the Lord your God,

who went before you, in a pillar of fire by night and in a cloud by day, to look for places for you to camp and to show you the way you should go.

When the Lord heard what you said, he became angry and swore:

“No one from this evil generation will see the good land that I swore to give to their ancestors,

except Caleb the son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give to him and to his descendants the land on which he walked, because he followed the Lord with all his heart.”

Because of you the Lord was angry with me and said to me, “You will not enter the land either.

But his assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will enter. Encourage him, for he will make Israel take possession of it.

But the children you said would be taken as spoil, your children who do not yet distinguish between good and evil, they will enter the land. I will give it to them, and they will take possession of it.

But as for you, turn around and go into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.”

Then you responded, “We have sinned against the Lord. We will rise and fight, according to everything the Lord our God has commanded us.” Each of you prepared yourself with your weapons of war, thinking that it would be easy to climb the mountainous region.

But the Lord said to me, “Tell them not to go up or fight, for I will not be with you. You will be defeated by your enemies.”

I told you this, but you did not listen to me; you rebelled against the Lord and presumptuously went up into the mountainous region.

The Amorites who lived there attacked them, pursued them like a swarm of bees and devastated them from Seir to Hormah.

You returned and wept before the Lord, but he neither heard your cry nor paid attention to you.

So you remained in Kadesh, where you remained for a long time.
