Thus were the heavens and the earth, and all that is in them, completed.

On the seventh day God had already completed the work he had done, and on that day he rested.

God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on it he rested from all the work he had done in creation.

No bush had yet sprouted in the field, and no plant had germinated, because the Lord God had not yet caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.

However, water came out of the ground and irrigated the entire surface of the ground.

Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being.

Now the Lord God had planted a garden in Eden, towards the east, and there he placed the man he had formed.

Then the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground, pleasing to the eye and good for food. And in the midst of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

In Eden, a river began to irrigate the garden, and then divided into four.

The name of the first is Pisom. He travels throughout the land of Havilah, where there is gold.

The gold of that land is excellent; There are also bdellium and onyx stone there.

The second, which runs throughout the land of Cush, is the Gihon.

The third, which runs along the east side of Assyria, is the Tigris. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

The Lord God placed man in the garden of Eden to care for it and cultivate it.

And the Lord God commanded the man: “Eat freely of any tree in the garden,

but do not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”

Then the Lord God declared: “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make for him someone to help him and correspond to him.”

After he formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the sky, the Lord God brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and the name that man gave to each living being, that would be its name.

So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the wild animals. However, no one was found for the man to help him and respond to him.

Then the Lord God made the man fall into a deep sleep and, while he was sleeping, he took one of his ribs, closing the place with flesh.

With the rib he had taken from the man, the Lord God made a woman and took her to him.

Then the man said:
“Yes, this is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh!
She will be called woman,
because it was taken out of man.”

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

The man and his wife lived naked, and felt no shame.
