Gospel of the Day – Luke 1:67-80

“And Zechariah his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he prophesied, saying:
Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, because he has visited and redeemed his people,

And raised up for us a mighty salvation In the house of David his servant.
As he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets, from the beginning of the world;

To deliver us from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us;
To show mercy to our fathers, And remember his holy covenant,
And from the oath which he swore to Abraham our father,

To grant us that, Freed from the hand of our enemies, we would serve him without fear, In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our lives.

And you, O child, will be called prophet of the Most High, Because you will go before the face of the Lord, to prepare his ways;

To give his people knowledge of salvation, In the forgiveness of their sins; Through the depths of the mercy of our God, With which the east from above has visited us;

To give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death; In order to direct our feet along the path of peace.

And the boy grew and became stronger in spirit. And he was in the deserts until the day when he would show himself to Israel.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through belief in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10:17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
