Gospel of the Day – Matthew 5:38-48

“You have heard that it was said: An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.
But I say to you, do not resist evil; but if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, offer him the other also;

And whoever wishes to plead with you and take away your tunic, let go of your cloak as well;

And if anyone forces you to walk a mile, go with him two.
Give to anyone who asks you, and do not turn away from anyone who wants you to lend to him.

You have heard that it was said: You shall love your neighbor, and you shall hate your enemy.

But I say to you: Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you; that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven;

Adverts

For he makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.

For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Do not publicans also do the same?

And if you only greet your brothers, what else are you doing? Don't tax collectors do this too? Be ye therefore perfect, as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through belief in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10:17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
