Gospel of the Day – Mark 8:1-13

“In those days, when there was a great crowd, and they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said to them:

I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me for three days and have nothing to eat.

And if he let them go to their homes fasting, they will faint on the way, because some of them have come from afar.

And his disciples answered him: Where can anyone satisfy them with bread here in the wilderness?

And he asked them: How many loaves do you have? And they said unto him, Seven.
And he ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground.

And he took the seven loaves, and when he had given thanks, he broke them, and gave them to his disciples, that they might set them before them, and they set them before the multitude.

There were also some fish; and when he had given thanks, he ordered them to set them before him as well.

And they ate and were satisfied; and from the pieces that remained they took up seven baskets. And those who ate were about four thousand; and fired them.

And immediately getting into the boat, with his disciples, he went to the parts of Dalmanuta. And the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with him, asking him for a sign from heaven to tempt him.

And sighing deeply in his spirit, he said: Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.

And leaving them, he got into the boat again and went to the other side.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through belief in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10:17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
