Gospel of the Day – Luke 15:1-32

“And all the tax collectors and sinners came to him to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them. And he proposed this parable to them, saying:

Que homem dentre vós, tendo cem ovelhas, e perdendo uma delas, não deixa no deserto as noventa e nove, e vai após a perdida até que venha a achá-la?

E achando-a, a põe sobre os seus ombros, jubiloso;
And when he comes home, he summons his friends and neighbors, saying to them: Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost sheep.

I tell you that there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who do not need repentance.

Or what woman, having ten drachmas, if she loses one drachma, does not light the lamp, and sweep the house, and search diligently until she finds it?

And when she finds it, she summons her friends and neighbors, saying: Rejoice with me, because I have found the lost drachma. Thus I tell you that there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.
And he said, A certain man had two sons;

And the youngest of them said to his father: Father, give me the share of the goods that belongs to me. And he divided the farm among them.

And a few days later, the youngest son, gathering everything together, departed for a distant land, and there he wasted his possessions, living dissolutely.

And when he had spent everything, there was a great famine in that land, and he began to suffer want. And he went and approached one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine.

And he wanted to fill his stomach with the acorns that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything.

And when he came to himself, he said: How many of my father's journeymen have plenty of bread, and here I perish of hunger!

I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your newsboys.

And he arose, and went to his father; and, when he was still far away, his father saw him, and was moved with deep compassion, and running, threw himself on his neck and kissed him.

And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

But the father said to his servants, Bring quickly the best clothes; and clothe him, and put a ring on his hand, and sandals on his feet;

And bring the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry;
For this son of mine was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to rejoice.

And his eldest son was in the field; and when he came, and came near the house, he heard the music and the dancing. And calling one of the servants, he asked him what that was.

And he said unto him, Thy brother hath come; and your father killed the fatted calf, because he received him safe and sound. But he was indignant and didn't want to go in.

And his father came out and urged him. But he answered and said to his father: Behold, I have served thee these many years, without ever transgressing thy commandment, and thou hast never given me a kid to make merry with my friends;

But when this son of yours, who wasted your wealth with harlots, came, you killed his fatted calf.

And he said unto him, Son, thou art with me always, and all my things are thine;

But it was right for us to rejoice and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and was found.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through belief in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10:17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
