Then God said to Moses: “Go up the mountain to meet the Lord, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy officials of Israel. Worship from a distance.

Only Moses will approach the Lord; the others don't. The people will not go up with him either.”

When Moses addressed the people and conveyed to them all the words and ordinances of the Lord, they responded in unison: “We will do everything that the Lord has commanded.”

Moses then wrote down everything the Lord had said. The next morning Moses got up, built an altar at the foot of the mountain and erected twelve stone pillars, representing the twelve tribes of Israel.

He then sent young Israelites, who offered burnt offerings and bulls as communion sacrifices to the Lord.

Moses put half of the blood in bowls and poured the other half on the altar.

Then he read the Book of the Covenant to the people, and they said, “We will faithfully do everything the Lord has commanded.”

Then Moses sprinkled the blood on the people, saying, “This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord made with you according to all these words.”

Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy rulers of Israel went up

and they saw the God of Israel, under whose feet was something like a sapphire pavement, like the sky in its splendor.

God, however, did not reach out to punish these leaders of the people of Israel; they saw God, and then they ate and drank.

The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and stay here; and I will give him the stone tablets with the law and the commandments that I wrote for the instruction of the people.”

Moses left with Joshua, his assistant, and went up to the mountain of God.

He said to the Israeli authorities: “Wait for us here until we return. Aaron and Hur will stay with you; Anyone who has a question to resolve can contact them.”

When Moses went up, the cloud covered the mountain,

and the glory of the Lord remained on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain. On the seventh day the Lord called Moses from within the cloud.

In the eyes of the Israelites, the glory of the Lord seemed like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain.

Moses entered the cloud and went up the mountain. And he remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights.
