And God spoke all these words:

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

“You will have no other gods besides me.

“You shall not make for yourself any idol, or any image of anything in heaven or on earth or in the waters under the earth.

You shall not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing children for the sins of their fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who despise me,

but I treat with kindness to a thousand generations those who love me and keep my commandments.

“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave anyone who takes his name in vain unpunished.

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

You will work six days and in them you will do all your work,

but the seventh day is the Sabbath dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your sons or daughters, nor your male or female servants, nor your animals, nor the foreigners who live in your cities.

For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and everything in them, but on the seventh day he rested. Therefore, the Lord blessed the seventh day and sanctified it.

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

 “You shall not kill.

 “You shall not commit adultery.

 “You shall not steal.

“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

“You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male or female servants, nor his ox or donkey, nor anything that belongs to him.”

When the people saw the thunder and the lightning, and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, they all trembled in fear. They stayed at a distance

and they said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself, and we will listen. But may God not speak to us, lest we die.”

Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid! God came to test you, so that the fear of God may be in you and free you from sin.”

But the people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the dark cloud in which God was.

The Lord said to Moses, “Say this to the Israelites: You have seen for yourselves that I spoke to you from heaven:

do not make idols of silver or gold to represent me.

“Make me an altar of earth, and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your fellowship offerings, your sheep and your oxen. Wherever I cause my name to be celebrated, I will come to you and bless you.

If you make me an altar of stones, do not make it with carved stones, because the use of tools would desecrate it.

Do not climb the steps to my altar, so that your nakedness will not be exposed there.”
