Gospel of the Day – Matthew 14:1-12

“At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the fame of Jesus,
And he said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he rose from the dead, and therefore these wonders work in him.

For Herod had laid hold of John, and bound him, and cast him into prison, for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife: for John had said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

And he wanted to kill him, but he feared the people, because they considered him a prophet.
But when Herod's birthday was being celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before him, and pleased Herod.

That's why he promised, with an oath, to give him everything he asked;
And she, instructed beforehand by her mother, said: Give me here, on a plate, the head of John the Baptist.

And the king was grieved, but for the sake of his oath, and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded that it be given to him.

And he had John beheaded in the prison. And his head was brought on a platter, and given to the girl, and she took it to her mother.

And his disciples came and took the body and buried it; and they went to announce it to Jesus.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through believing in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10;17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
