Gospel of the Day – Luke 24:13-35

“And behold, two of them went that same day to a village named Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.
And they were talking among themselves about everything that had happened.

And it came to pass, as they talked together, and questioned one another, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were closed, so that they did not recognize him.

And he said unto them, What manner of conversation are these that ye speak among yourselves, as ye walk, and why are ye sad? And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered and said unto him,

Art thou alone a stranger in Jerusalem, and knowest not the things which have come to pass there in these days? And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him,

Those that concern Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and all the people; And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and crucified him.

And we had hoped that it had been he who would have redeemed Israel: but now, besides all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

It is true that some women among us also amazed us, who went to the tomb early in the morning;
And when they did not find his body, they returned, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.

And some of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.
And he said to them:

O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. And they came to the village to which they were going, and he made as though he were going farther.

And they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed, and brake, and him it gave.

They opened to them then the eyes, and knew him, and he disappeared from them. And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

And they rose up that same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
They said, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon.”

And they told them what had happened on the way, and how he was known of them in the breaking of the bread.“.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through believing in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10;17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
