Gospel of the Day – Matthew 5:27-37

“Ye have heard that it was said unto them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery.
But I tell you, whoever looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Therefore, if your right eye offends you, pluck it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you that one of your members should perish than that your whole body should be cast into hell.

And if your right hand offends you, cut it off and throw it from you, for it is better for you that one of your members perish than that your whole body be cast into hell.

It was also said: Whoever leaves his wife must give her a bill of divorce.

But I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, except for fornication, causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.

Furthermore, you have heard that it was said to those of old: You shall not swear, but you shall fulfill your oaths to the Lord.

But I say to you, do not swear at all; nor by heaven, because it is the throne of God;

Nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King;

Nor shall you swear by your head, for you cannot make a hair white or black.

But let your speech be: Yes, yes; No no; because anything beyond this is of evil origin.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through believing in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10;17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
