Gospel of the Day – Matthew 20:1-16

“For the kingdom of heaven is like a man, a householder, who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. And, agreeing with the workers at a sum of money per day, he sent them to his vineyard.

And going out about the third hour, he saw others standing idle in the square,
And he said unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard, and I will give you whatever is right. And they were.

Leaving again, around the sixth and ninth hour, he did the same. And going out about the eleventh hour, he found others who were idle, and he asked them, Why are you idle all the day?

They said to him: Because no one hired us. He says to them: Go you also into the vineyard, and you will receive what is fair.

And when night approached, the lord of the vineyard said to his butler: Call the workers, and pay them the newspaper, beginning with the last, until the first.

And when those who had gone about the eleventh hour arrived, they each received money.

But when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but in the same way they received money each. And when they received him, they murmured against the father of the family,

Saying: These last ones worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us, who endured the fatigue and calm of the day.

But he answered and said to one of them: Friend, I do you no harm; Didn't you settle some money with me?

Take what is yours, and leave; I want to give to this last one as much as I want to give to you.
Or is it not lawful for me to do what I want with what is mine? Or is your eye bad because I'm good?

So the last will be first, and the first last; for many are called, but few are chosen.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through believing in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10;17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
