Gospel of the Day – Matthew 20:1-16

“For the kingdom of heaven is like a man who is the householder, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.

And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And about the third hour he went out, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,

And he said to them, “You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.” So they went. And he went out again about the sixth and ninth hour and did likewise.

And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and said unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?

They said to him: Because no one hired us. He says to them: Go you also into the vineyard, and you will receive what is fair.

And when night approached, the lord of the vineyard said to his butler: Call the workers, and pay them the newspaper, beginning with the last, until the first.

And they that were about the eleventh hour came, and received every man a penny. But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more: nevertheless they likewise received every man a penny.

And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,
Saying: These last ones worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us, who endured the fatigue and calm of the day.

But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Take that which is thine, and go thy way: I will give to this last man as much as to thee.

Or is it not lawful for me to do what I want with what is mine? Or is your eye bad because I'm good?

So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few are chosen..

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through believing in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10;17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
