Gospel of the Day – Matthew 18:21-35

“Then Peter came to him and said, Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven? Jesus said to him: I do not say to you that up to seven; but, up to seventy times seven.

Therefore the kingdom of heaven can be compared to a certain king who wanted to reckon with his servants; And as he began to count, there was brought before him one who owed him ten thousand talents;

And when he had nothing to pay, his master ordered him and his wife and children to be sold, along with everything he had, so that the debt could be paid.

Then that servant, prostrating himself, revered him, saying: Lord, be generous to me, and I will pay you everything.

Then the Lord of that servant, moved with intimate compassion, released him and forgave him the debt.

But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants, who owed him a hundred pieces of money, and, taking hold of him, he choked him, saying: Pay me what you owe me.

Then his companion, falling at his feet, begged him, saying: Be generous to me, and I will pay you everything.

However, he didn't want to, but he went to lock him up in prison until he paid the debt.
So when his fellow servants saw what had happened, they were very sad, and went and told their master all that had happened.

Then his master, calling him before him, said to him: You wicked servant, I forgave you all that debt, because you begged me.

Shouldn't you also have had compassion on your companion, as I also had mercy on you? And, indignant, his master handed him over to the tormentors until he paid everything he owed him.

My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if you do not forgive each one his brother's trespasses from your heart.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through believing in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10;17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
