Gospel of the Day – Matthew 15:1-14

“Then scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,
Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.

But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

For God commanded, saying: Honor your father and your mother; and: Whoever curses his father or mother will certainly die.

But you say, Whoever says to father or mother, What you could benefit from me is an offering to the Lord; He does not need to honor either his father or his mother,
And so you invalidated, by your tradition, the commandment of God.
You hypocrites, Isaiah prophesied well about you, saying:

These people draw near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

But in vain they worship me, teaching doctrines that are the precepts of men.
And calling the multitude to him, he said unto them, Hear, and understand:

What defiles a man is not what goes into the mouth, but what comes out of the mouth, that is what defiles a man.

Then his disciples came to him and said to him, Do you know that when the Pharisees heard these words they were offended?

But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be uprooted.

Leave them; They are blind leaders of the blind. Now if a blind man leads a blind man, they will both fall into the pit.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through believing in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10;17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
