“For Herod himself had given orders to arrest John, bind him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married.

For John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” So Herodias hated him and wanted to kill him.

But he could not do so, because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man; and when he heard him, he was perplexed.

Still, I would have liked to hear it. Finally, an opportune moment arrived.

On his birthday, Herod gave a banquet for his most important leaders, military commanders and the leading figures of Galilee.

When Herodias’ daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. The king said to the young woman, “Ask me for anything you wish, and I will give it to you.”

And he promised her with an oath: “Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you, up to half of my kingdom.”

She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” “The head of John the Baptist,” she replied.

Immediately the young woman hurried to present herself to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”

The king was very distressed, but because of his oath and the guests, he did not want to deny the young woman's request.

So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head. The man went and beheaded John in prison.
and brought his head on a platter.

He gave it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. When John's disciples heard this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through believing in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10;17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
