Others said, “It is Elijah.” Others said, “It is a prophet, or like one of the prophets.”
But when Herod heard it, he said, This is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.
For Herod himself had sent and arrested John, and bound him in prison, because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because he had married her.
For John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” Now Herodias watched him and wanted to kill him, but could not.

For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man; and he kept him safe, and did many things, attending to him, and heard him gladly.
Now a convenient time came when Herod, on his birthday, gave a supper to his lords, commanders, and rulers of Galilee,
Then the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat at the table with him. Then the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.”
And he swore to her, saying, Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom. And she went out, and said to her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.
And he came in at once, and hurriedly asked the king, saying, I want you to give me immediately on a platter the head of John the Baptist.
And the king was very sad; nevertheless, for the sake of his oath, and of them that sat at meat with him, he would not deny her.
And the king sent an executioner at once, and commanded that John's head be brought to him: and he went and beheaded him in the prison:
And he brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.
And when his disciples heard it, they came and took up his body, and laid it in a tomb“.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day
As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through believing in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10;17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
