Gospel of the Day - Luke 4:16-30

“He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day, as was his custom, he went into the synagogue. And he stood up to read.

The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. He opened it and found the place where it is written:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed

and proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then he closed the book, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him;

and he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. But they asked, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”

Jesus said to them, “Of course you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! ’ Do here in your hometown what we heard you did in Capernaum.”

He continued: “I tell you the truth: No prophet is accepted in his own land.

I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heavens were shut for three and a half years, and there was a great famine throughout the land.

But Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow at Zarephath in the land of Sidon.

There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; yet none of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian.”

Everyone in the synagogue was furious when they heard this.

They got up, drove him out of the city, and took him to the top of the hill on which the city was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.

But Jesus passed through the midst of them and went away.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through believing in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10;17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
