“And all the publicans and sinners came to him to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying: This one receives sinners, and eats with them. And he proposed this parable to them, saying:

Jesus continued: “A man had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, I want my share of the inheritance.’ So he divided his property between them.
“Not long after, the youngest son gathered together everything he had, and went to a distant region; and there he wasted his wealth by living irresponsibly.
After he had spent everything, there was a great famine throughout that region, and he began to be in need. So he went to work with one of the citizens of that region, who sent him to his field to look after pigs.
He longed to fill his stomach with the pods of the carob trees that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am dying of hunger!

I will set out and go back to my father, and will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.'
Then he got up and went to his father. “While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. “The son said to him,
'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' “But the father said to his servants, 'Hurry! Bring out the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet.
Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let us celebrate and have a feast. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.
“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. As he approached the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was happening.
He replied, 'Your brother has come back, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has got him back safe and sound.' "The older son was furious and would not go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him.
But he answered his father, 'Look! All these years I have worked like a slave in your service and have never disobeyed your orders. Yet you have never given me even a young goat so that I could celebrate with my friends.
But when your son, who has squandered your wealth with prostitutes, comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!'
“The father said, 'My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.
But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' “.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day
As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through believing in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10;17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
