 The Lord said to Moses:

“Tell the Israelites to change course and camp near Pi-Hairoth, between Migdol and the sea. Camp by the sea, opposite Baal-zephon.

Pharaoh will think that the Israelites are wandering around in confusion, surrounded by the desert.

Then I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will pursue them. However, I will be glorified through Pharaoh and all his army; and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” And so the Israelites did.

They told the king of Egypt that the people had fled. Then Pharaoh and his advisors changed their minds and said, “What have we done? We let the Israelites leave and lost our slaves! “

Then Pharaoh ordered his chariot to be ready, and took his army with him.

He took all the chariots of Egypt, including six hundred of the best of these chariots, each with an officer in command.

The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he pursued the Israelites, who marched triumphantly.

The Egyptians, with all of Pharaoh's horses and chariots, horsemen and infantry, went in pursuit of the Israelites and overtook them when they were camped by the sea, near Pi-Hairoth, opposite Baal-zephon.

As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked and saw the Egyptians marching towards them. And, terrified, they cried out to the Lord.

They said to Moses, “Was it because of a lack of tombs in Egypt that you brought us to die in the desert? What did you do to us, taking us out of there?

Had we not said to him in Egypt: Leave us alone! We will be slaves to the Egyptians! Better to be slaves to the Egyptians than to die in the desert! “

Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and see the deliverance that the Lord will bring you today, because you will never again see the Egyptians that you see today.

The Lord will fight for you; just calm down.”

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move forward.

Lift up your rod and stretch out your hand over the sea, and the waters will divide so that the Israelites can cross the sea on dry land.

But I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they will persecute them. And I will be glorified by the defeat of Pharaoh and his entire army, with his chariots and his horsemen.

The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I am glorified with the defeat of Pharaoh, with his chariots and his horsemen.”

Then the angel of God, who was at the head of the armies of Israel, withdrew and placed himself behind them. The pillar of cloud also went out in front of them and stood behind them,

between the Egyptians and the Israelites. The cloud brought darkness to one and light to the other, so that the Egyptians could not approach the Israelites all night.

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord turned the sea away and turned it into dry land, with a strong east wind that blew all that night. The waters divided,

and the Israelites crossed through the middle of the sea on dry land, with a wall of water on the right and another on the left.

The Egyptians pursued them, and all Pharaoh's horses, chariots, and horsemen followed them into the middle of the sea.

At the end of the morning, from the top of the pillar of fire and cloud, the Lord saw the army of the Egyptians and threw them into confusion.

It caused the wheels of their cars to begin to come off, so that they had difficulty driving them. And the Egyptians shouted, “Let us flee from the Israelites! The Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.”

But the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may return on the Egyptians and on their chariots and on their horsemen.”

Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea returned to its place. When the Egyptians were fleeing, they ran into the water, and the Lord threw them into the sea.

The waters returned and covered his chariots and his horsemen, all of Pharaoh's army that had pursued the Israelites into the sea. Nobody survived.

But the Israelites crossed the sea on dry land, with a wall of water on their right and another on their left.

That day the Lord saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and the Israelites saw the dead Egyptians on the beach.

Israel saw the great power of the Lord against the Egyptians, feared the Lord and put their trust in him, as well as in Moses his servant.
