It is through belief in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10:17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.

God of the living: when Jesus reveals the future we try to forget

There are questions that people ask not because they want to learn, but because they want to win an argument. Questions that seem intelligent, well-crafted, full of logic… but, deep down, carry a hidden intention: to corner God, reduce faith to cold reasoning and, if possible, discredit hope.

The Gospel of the Day presents us with such a scene. A group approaches Jesus with a complicated question, an almost absurd “hypothetical” case, constructed to confuse and ridicule the belief in the resurrection. They want to prove that faith is illogical, that the future is a myth, that life ends in the grave. And Jesus responds in a way that not only dismantles the argument… but opens a gigantic window to the mystery of eternal life.

This passage is profound because it touches on a subject that every human being, at some point, needs to face: Death and what comes after. But Jesus doesn't speak about this out of fear. He speaks with authority. He doesn't offer a pretty theory for comfort. He reveals a reality: Life doesn't end. God is not the God of the dead. God is the God of the living.

And that sentence changes everything.

1) When faith becomes debate: the trap of the “experts”

The group that questions Jesus is made up of influential religious people, knowledgeable about the Scriptures, but with one important characteristic: they did not believe in the resurrection. For them, life was this place. Everything ended in the end. The rest was exaggeration, imagination, popular tradition.

And then they come up with an elaborate story: a marriage that, due to circumstances of law and tradition, is repeated with several siblings. And in the end, they ask: "In the resurrection, whose wife will she be?"“

The intention is clear: to create an impossible knot and make the idea of resurrection seem ridiculous. It's as if they were saying: "If there is life after death, then the law of marriage becomes chaos. Therefore, there is no resurrection."“

This type of trap still exists today, just in different clothes. Sometimes it's someone who uses science as an excuse to despise faith. Sometimes it's someone who uses philosophy to feel superior. Sometimes it's someone who uses religious trauma to justify indifference.

But Jesus is not intimidated.

He doesn't play the "who's smarter" game. He gets straight to the point: Your mistake is that you are thinking about heaven with earthly logic.

2) Heaven is not a repetition of life here.

Jesus responds that, in the resurrection, life does not function as it does here. Marriage—which here has a concrete, human, historical function—will not be necessary in the same way, because existence will be transformed.

This is a huge key: Eternal life is not "more of the same". It is a new reality. It is not a tired extension of current life. It is a transfigured life, full, complete.

Many people are afraid of heaven because they imagine a monotonous eternity. Others think it doesn't make sense because they believe everything needs to stay the same. But Jesus reveals that the resurrection is a change of condition.

It's as if He were saying, "You are trying to measure the eternal with the ruler of the temporary."“

The resurrection is another way of existing — and this does not diminish our human bonds; on the contrary, It purifies and elevates everything.. Love doesn't disappear. It is completed. Communion doesn't end. It becomes perfect.

3) "They are like angels": what does that really mean?

When Jesus says that the resurrected are “like angels,” He is not saying that we will become angels (being human remains being human). What He is revealing is a quality: life will be free from the limitations that today bind us to time and death.

Today we live under the shadow of fragility.

the body gets tired,

the mind fails,

the heart breaks,

Life is unstable.,

Time is slipping away.

In the resurrection, this changes. Life will no longer be under threat. Death will no longer have authority. This is not just consolation; it is a promise.

And then Jesus delivers a decisive statement: Those who have been resurrected can no longer die.

This is powerful because it's the end of all existential anxiety. Here, everything we love has an expiration date. Every joy carries the possibility of ending. Every hug has a "what if...". But in the Kingdom, life is not interrupted.

In other words: resurrection is the place where love has no farewell.

4) Children of the resurrection: a new identity

Jesus also calls the resurrected "children of the resurrection." This means that the resurrection is not a random event—it is a sonship, an identity. It is belonging to God in a definitive way.

Here we live as "children of time," as "children of effort," as "children of fear." We live running, trying to hold on to everything, trying to prove something, trying to protect ourselves from the end.

But Jesus reveals that there is another kind of belonging: being a child of God's future. Being a child of the life He promised. Being a child of a hope that does not disappoint.

This changes the way we experience the present. Those who believe in the resurrection don't live just any old way. Not because they're terrified of hell, but because they understand the value of eternity.

5) Jesus' argument: God does not abandon his friends.

After correcting their flawed logic, Jesus shows that the resurrection is not an "invented" idea, but is found within Scripture itself. He does this by using the name of God linked to the patriarchs: God presents himself as the God of concrete people. God commits himself to stories, to faces, to covenants.

And here is the core of the revelation: If God presents himself as their God, then they are not invalidated. God does not make alliances with those who are "extinguished." God does not call someone by name only to later throw them away.

The resurrection isn't just about "coming back to life." It's about God being faithful. It's about God's faithfulness being stronger than death.

Our problem is that we think of death as the end. But Jesus reveals that, for God, death is a comma. Not because the pain is small, but because it is not definitive.

6) "God is not the God of the dead, but of the living"“

This is the phrase that keeps echoing. It's simple, direct, powerful.

She teaches us two things at the same time:

For God, life never ends.

Our relationship with Him is stronger than any grave.

If God is the God of the living, then everything changes:

Death is not the greatest power in the universe.

Mourning is not the end of the story.

Longing is not a cry into the void.

Hope is not self-deception.

That's why this passage is so comforting. It doesn't eliminate the pain of losing someone. But it places the pain within a certainty: Life is kept safe in God.

And when something is kept safe in God, it is not lost.

7) The danger of the Sadducees: a life without horizon

The group that questions Jesus represents a very modern temptation: to live as if there were no eternity. Perhaps not with words, but with choices.

Because it's possible to say "I believe" and, in practice, live as if everything only happens here. To live with a shallow spirituality, without depth, without true hope, without a vision of the future.

When the resurrection disappears from faith, spiritual life becomes moralism or therapy. Faith becomes merely "being a good person." And of course, being good is important. But the Gospel is more than that. The Gospel is the announcement of a new life, of a definitive victory, of an eternal reality.

Without resurrection, everything falls short:

Forgiveness becomes difficult (because "it's not worth it"),

charity becomes a "waste of time",

loyalty becomes "nonsense".,

Hope turns into "romanticism".

The resurrection, therefore, is not a detail of faith. It is a foundation.

8) What does this passage say to those who are suffering?

This Gospel has a hidden embrace for those who are grieving, for those who have lost someone, for those who fear death, for those who live with existential anxiety.

Because Jesus doesn't speak of the resurrection as a "maybe." He speaks of it as a certainty. He shows that life in God cannot be destroyed.

This means that death does not have the final say on:

your mother, your father, your son, your friend,

your story,

your love,

your tears.

God sees. God gathers. God protects. God resurrects.

And this is not cheap poetry. It is the foundation of Christianity.

9) How can we live this Gospel in our daily lives?

Resurrection is not just an idea to think about at the end of life. It is a way of living today.

Here are some concrete ways to live from that hope:

1. Live with less fear.
If life doesn't end, you don't need to cling to everything as if it were your last breath. That's not irresponsibility, it's trust.

2. Invest in what lasts forever.
What you do for love is never lost. What you do for God remains.

3. Learn to love freely.
The resurrection teaches you that love is not possession. Love is communion. And communion never ends.

4. Look at suffering from a different perspective.
Pain is not a sign of God's absence. Often it is part of the journey. But it is not the final destination.

5. Pray for those who have passed away and for those who are alive.
The Christian faith is not just about "remembering with longing," it's about trusting with hope.

10) The central message: death does not rule the universe.

In the end, this Gospel gives us a certainty that changes the way we breathe:

Death does not rule the universe — God does.

And God is the God of the living.

This means that:

You weren't created for nothing.,

You don't walk into empty space.,

You are not an accident.,

You are called to life.

And when Jesus says this, He is not offering a religious idea for comfort.
