But the Pharisee was surprised to see that he had not washed before eating.

Now you, the Pharisees, clean the outside of the cup and the plate; but your interior is full of rapine and evil.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Crazy! Didn't whoever made the exterior also make the interior?
\nRather give alms than you have, and behold, everything will be clean for you.<\/span><\/strong>\u201c<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day<\/h2>\n

As Christians, we place a high value on God\u2019s Word. It is through belief in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10:17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.<\/p>\n

The excerpt of Luke 11:37-41<\/strong> It is one of those Gospels that seems short, but carries a direct confrontation of Jesus with something very profound: A religiosity that cares for the outside but ignores the heart.<\/strong>. This passage stirs our conscience because it doesn't just talk about a religious group from the past. It speaks to a human temptation that remains alive today: the temptation to appear good, instead of being transformed.<\/p>\n

The text essentially says that Jesus was invited to eat at the house of a Pharisee. And when Jesus sat down at the table without washing his hands according to the ritual, the Pharisee was scandalized. Then Jesus responded with strong words: they clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and wickedness. And Jesus concludes with a phrase that is almost a stroke of light: Give alms from what is within, and then everything will be pure.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let's walk through this passage calmly, because it's a mirror. And mirrors aren't for condemning\u2014they're for revealing.<\/p>\n

1) The setting: Jesus at the table with a Pharisee.<\/h2>\n

The Gospel begins simply:<\/p>\n

Jesus was invited to eat at the house of a Pharisee.<\/p>\n

This is already important for two reasons.<\/p>\n

First: Jesus was not "anti-Pharisee" in the sense of avoiding contact. He went where he was called. He sat at the table with religious people, with sinners, with the rich, with the poor. He crossed social boundaries naturally. This shows that Jesus is not afraid of "rigid" environments. He enters them.<\/p>\n

Secondly: the table is always a place of truth. It is in conviviality that customs, expectations, and silent criticisms emerge. Religion can be very comfortable when it remains in the realm of ideas. But when Jesus sits at the table, the Gospel becomes concrete, personal, and uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

And that's exactly what happened.<\/p>\n

\n

2) The detail about "not washing your hands": it's not hygiene, it's ritual.<\/h2>\n

When Jesus sits down at the table, the Pharisee is amazed because He he did not perform ablution<\/strong>, that is, the purification ritual.<\/p>\n

And here we need to understand: the problem wasn't hygiene. It was a religious rite. In many Jewish traditions of that time, washing hands before eating wasn't just a matter of physical cleanliness. It was a symbol of ceremonial purity. It was a "marker" of fidelity and spiritual identity.<\/p>\n

So, when Jesus doesn't perform that ritual, the Pharisee interprets it as:<\/p>\n
