For John had been telling Herod, \u00abIt is not lawful for you to have your brother\u2019s wife.\u00bb So Herodias hated him and wanted to kill him, but she could not, because Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. He liked to listen to him, but he was perplexed.<\/p>\n

Finally, the opportune day arrived. On his birthday, Herod gave a banquet for his nobles, the military commanders, and the leading men of Galilee. The daughter of Herodias came in and danced, pleasing Herod and his guests. The king then said to the girl, \u00abAsk me for whatever you want, and I will give it to you.\u00bb And he even swore to her, \u00abI will give you whatever you ask, even up to half my kingdom.\u00bb She went out and asked her mother, \u00abWhat should I ask for?\u00bb Her mother replied, \u00abThe head of John the Baptist.\u00bb Returning quickly to the king, the girl asked, \u00abI want you to give me right now, on a platter, the head of John the Baptist.\u00bb The king was very distressed, but because of his oath and his guests, he did not want to break his word. Immediately, he sent an executioner to cut off John's head and bring it. The executioner went and, there in the prison, cut off his head, brought it on a platter, and gave it to the girl.
