Gospel (Mc<\/em>\u00a03,31-35):<\/strong>\u00a0Then Jesus\u00ab mother and brothers arrived. They stood outside and sent someone in to call him. A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, \u00bbYour mother and brothers and sisters are outside looking for you.\u00ab He replied, \u00bbWho is my mother? Who are my brothers?\u00ab Looking around at those seated in a circle around him, he said, \u00bbHere are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

You know those moments when life seems to pull you in all directions? A lot of people demanding attention, expectations, demands, and in the midst of it all you're trying to be true to what you believe, to what you feel, to what God is doing in your heart.<\/p>\n

Well, Mark 3:31-35 is a short passage, but full of impact. One of those that seems simple on first reading, but when you stop and think about it, it starts to affect you from the inside.<\/p>\n

Let's read the passage with an open heart:<\/p>\n

Jesus' mother and brothers arrived, stood outside, and sent word to him. The crowd was sitting around him, and someone said, "Look, your mother and brothers are outside looking for you."\u201c
Jesus replied, \u201cWho is my mother, and who are my brothers?\u201d
Looking around at those who were standing there, he said, \u201cHere are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

That's it. Just five verses... and an entire universe within them.<\/p>\n

And today I want to talk to you about this passage as one sits at a table with a friend, without haste, with sincerity, with affection, and with that good feeling that God truly speaks to us \u2014 in daily life, in the family, in the heart, in our choices.<\/p>\n

\n

The scene is almost "normal"... until Jesus responds differently.<\/h2>\n

First, let's imagine the scene.<\/p>\n

Jesus is teaching. There are many people around. A real crowd. He is in the center, the people are sitting there, listening, absorbing everything. And then Mary and Jesus' brothers arrive.<\/p>\n

They don't go in. They stay outside.<\/p>\n

That already says a lot: the place where Jesus is is so crowded, so lively, so bustling, that the family can't get through. So they send for him.<\/p>\n

And someone warns: "Your mother and your brothers are outside looking for you."\u201c<\/p>\n

If it were us, we'd probably think: "Sure, it's my mom, I'll just stop here for a second, answer the phone, and talk to her."\u201c<\/p>\n

Yes, that would be totally understandable. Family is family.<\/p>\n

But Jesus does something that may sound surprising: he doesn't get up and run. He doesn't stop teaching. He doesn't treat it as an absolute priority. Instead, he responds with a question:<\/p>\n

\u201c"Who is my mother and who are my siblings?"\u201d<\/p>\n

And that was it\u2026 everyone there must have fallen silent.<\/p>\n

Because it wasn't an obvious question. Everyone knew who Jesus' mother was. Everyone knew who his brothers were. So why does he speak in that way?<\/p>\n

Jesus is not disrespecting anyone. He is revealing something greater.<\/p>\n

\n

Jesus doesn't diminish Mary... he expands the concept of family.<\/h2>\n

It's very important for us to understand the tone of the Gospel here. Jesus is not denying his mother. He is not erasing his story. He is not being cold or indifferent.<\/p>\n

On the contrary: he is showing that, starting from the Kingdom of God, the family grows.<\/p>\n

It's as if he were saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I have a blood family\u2026 but I also have a spiritual family. And that family is made up of all those who do God\u2019s will.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is beautiful because it doesn't exclude anyone\u2014it just opens the door for more people to come in.<\/p>\n

And let's be honest: how many times have we felt a lack of belonging?<\/p>\n

Sometimes you're surrounded by people... but you feel alone.<\/p>\n

Sometimes you're inside your own house... but you feel like nobody understands you.<\/p>\n

Sometimes your own family history has its wounds: distance, fights, misunderstandings, scars that still hurt today.<\/p>\n

And then Jesus comes and says calmly, looking at those around him:<\/p>\n

\u201c"Here are my mother and my siblings."\u201d<\/p>\n

In other words: "You belong."\u201c<\/p>\n

That's what he does. He creates a sense of belonging.<\/p>\n

\n

A welcoming gaze: "looking at those who were around..."\u201c<\/h2>\n

This detail really moves me: the text says that Jesus looked around.<\/p>\n

He didn't just answer. He looked at the people. He saw them.<\/p>\n

Because Jesus doesn't speak of spiritual family as an abstract, cold, theoretical concept. He points it out. He includes it. He welcomes it.<\/p>\n

He makes the crowd cease to be a crowd and become a home.<\/p>\n

And perhaps you need to hear this today: Jesus sees you.<\/p>\n

You are not just "another one" in the world. You are not just a face in the crowd. You are not invisible.<\/p>\n

When he says, "Here they are...", he is saying, "I recognize you."\u201c<\/p>\n

And that has enormous power.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201c"He who does the will of God": it seems simple, but it is profound.<\/h2>\n

Now comes the central part: Jesus says that his true family is made up of those who do God's will.<\/p>\n

And here's a valuable detail: he doesn't say "who knows everything," "who never makes mistakes," or "who is perfect.".<\/p>\n

He says, "Whoever does the will of God.".<\/p>\n

In other words: people who choose God along the way. People who commit themselves. People who try. People who seek.<\/p>\n

Because doing God's will isn't about living a flawless life. It's about living a life with direction.<\/p>\n

And direction changes everything.<\/p>\n

A person may stumble, but if they know where they are going, they get up and keep going.<\/p>\n

A person may have bad days, but if they hold on to God, they will not be completely lost.<\/p>\n

A person may feel fear, doubt, or weariness, but if they continue to lean towards God, that is already faith in action.<\/p>\n

This passage is not about "being good enough".<\/p>\n

It's about truly belonging to Jesus.<\/p>\n

\n

Faith creates bonds that the world cannot explain.<\/h2>\n

There's something very beautiful about this: Jesus affirms that there is a type of bond that isn't just biological.<\/p>\n

It is the bond of the spirit.<\/p>\n

The bond of those who walk in the same direction.<\/p>\n

From those who share the same hope.<\/p>\n

Who kneels and speaks to the same Father.<\/p>\n

From those who love the same truth.<\/p>\n

And this is something the Church has lived by from the beginning: brothers and sisters in faith.<\/p>\n

It's not a "nice" way of speaking. It's a type of deep relationship.<\/p>\n

They're the kind of people who show up when you're weak.<\/p>\n

Someone who prays for you without you even asking.<\/p>\n

That gives you a word that ignites your soul.<\/p>\n

That reminds you of God when you are forgetting.<\/p>\n

Someone who hugs you without judgment.<\/p>\n

That helps you start over.<\/p>\n

This is spiritual family.<\/p>\n

And she is a gift.<\/p>\n

\n

But is Jesus rejecting his family?<\/h2>\n

This is a common question when you read the text quickly. But no, Jesus is not rejecting Mary and her brothers.<\/p>\n

In fact, he is teaching everyone a lesson: even the strongest earthly ties need to align with the Kingdom of God.<\/p>\n

Jesus did not come to be merely "the son of Mary." He came to be the Savior of the world.<\/p>\n

And this does not diminish Mary\u2014on the contrary. Mary is precisely an example of someone who does God's will.<\/p>\n

If there's anyone who experienced this intensely, it was her.<\/p>\n

When Mary said, "Let it be done to me according to your word," she placed herself completely in God's will.<\/p>\n

So, in a way, Mary is the mother of Jesus by blood\u2026 and also by obedience, by faith, by surrender.<\/p>\n

She embodies that saying of Jesus more than anyone else.<\/p>\n

\n

Sometimes God's will puts us in uncomfortable places.<\/h2>\n

Now let's bring this to real life.<\/p>\n

Have you ever noticed that following God's will is often not the most comfortable option?<\/p>\n

Sometimes it's easier to please people.<\/p>\n

Sometimes it's easier to stay quiet and avoid conflict.<\/p>\n

Sometimes you feel like choosing the quickest, safest, most "normal" route.<\/p>\n

But God's will often calls us to something greater.<\/p>\n

Something that requires maturity.<\/p>\n

Something that requires courage.<\/p>\n

Something that requires a change of mindset.<\/p>\n

And here's a sensitive point: sometimes even family members may not understand your steps of faith.<\/p>\n

Not because He doesn't love you, but because He can't always see what God is doing in you.<\/p>\n

Some people will think you're exaggerating if you pray more.<\/p>\n

Some people will find it "strange" that you want to live a more holy life.<\/p>\n

Some people will think you've become "too religious".<\/p>\n

And it can hurt.<\/p>\n

But Jesus shows you that you are not alone.<\/p>\n

If you choose God's will, you have a family in the Kingdom.<\/p>\n

You have a place.<\/p>\n

You have spiritual brothers and sisters.<\/p>\n

And most importantly: you have Jesus.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cBrother, sister, and mother\u201d: the Kingdom has no hierarchy of affection.<\/h2>\n

Notice that Jesus doesn't just say "brother." He says:<\/p>\n

\u201c"This is my brother, my sister, and my mother."\u201d<\/p>\n

That's very beautiful.<\/p>\n

It includes everyone. It recognizes that there are various forms of belonging and affection within God's family.<\/p>\n

There are people who will take care of you like a mother does.<\/p>\n

There are people who will walk alongside you like a brother.<\/p>\n

There are people who will welcome you like a sister would welcome you.<\/p>\n

The Kingdom of God is a place of complete, wholehearted, all-encompassing love.<\/p>\n

It is not a place of spiritual competition.<\/p>\n

It's not a place of "who is holier".<\/p>\n

It's a place of community.<\/p>\n

It's a place for relationships.<\/p>\n

It's a place where we learn to love like Jesus loves.<\/p>\n

\n

Doing God's will is much more than "following rules."\u201c<\/h2>\n

Perhaps you are reading this and thinking, "Okay, but how do I know what God's will is?"\u201c<\/p>\n

And I like to think of it this way: God's will is not a labyrinth to confuse you. It's a path to help you mature.<\/p>\n

Of course, there are specific decisions (work, relationships, changes, big choices), but there is also the basic principle of the Gospel, which is very clear.<\/p>\n

God's will is revealed when you choose:<\/p>\n

    Love instead of harboring resentment.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Forgive instead of seeking revenge.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Speaking the truth instead of living behind masks.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Be humble instead of always wanting to be right.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Pray instead of despairing.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    To serve instead of just waiting to be served.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Trust instead of trying to control everything.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    This is God's will happening in everyday life.<\/p>\n

    And when you live that way, you're becoming like Jesus.<\/p>\n

    And when you resemble Jesus, you are home.<\/p>\n

    \n

    Jesus' question continues to resonate today.<\/h2>\n

    I think it's very powerful that Jesus asks:<\/p>\n

    \u201c"Who is my mother and who are my siblings?"\u201d<\/p>\n

    Because this question spans centuries and reaches us as well.<\/p>\n

    It almost becomes a question for our own hearts:<\/p>\n

    \u201c"Who is your real family?"\u201d<\/p>\n

    Not in the sense of despising relatives, never.<\/p>\n

    But in the sense of recognizing those who share with you that which is eternal.<\/p>\n

    Who is with you in faith?.<\/p>\n

    Who brings you closer to God?.<\/p>\n

    Who inspires you to stay?.<\/p>\n

    Who sustains you in prayer?.<\/p>\n

    Who helps you to do the Father's will?.<\/p>\n

    This is a treasure.<\/p>\n

    And if you have a spiritual family, cherish them.<\/p>\n

    If you are still building this, ask God\u2014because He loves to give this gift.<\/p>\n

    \n

    The hidden invitation in Mark 3:31-35<\/h2>\n

    Ultimately, this passage is a very sweet invitation.<\/p>\n

    Jesus is saying:<\/p>\n

    \u201c"Do you want to be part of my family? Then come."\u201d<\/p>\n

    It's not elitist. It's not closed off. It's not just for a select few.<\/p>\n

    It is for those who do God's will.<\/p>\n

    And that's an open door.<\/p>\n

    A family that doesn't require a last name.<\/p>\n

    It doesn't require status.<\/p>\n

    No resume required.<\/p>\n

    It doesn't require a perfect past.<\/p>\n

    It only requires a heart turned towards God.<\/p>\n

    And you know what? That's exactly where faith becomes most beautiful: when we understand that God calls us not only to "believe in him," but to live with him.<\/p>\n

    To belong.<\/p>\n

    To sit nearby.<\/p>\n

    To listen to.<\/p>\n

    To walk together.<\/p>\n

    \n

    A very simple (and very true) conclusion.<\/h2>\n

    Mark 3:31-35 shows us that Jesus creates a new type of family in the world.<\/p>\n

    A family based not only on blood ties, but on obedience, love, and commitment to God.<\/p>\n

    This doesn't diminish natural bonds\u2014it just shows that there's an even greater reality.<\/p>\n

    And if today you are searching for your place, your meaning, your sense of belonging... this passage embraces you.<\/p>\n

    Because Jesus looks around and says:<\/p>\n

    \u201c"Here are my mother and my siblings."\u201d<\/p>\n

    And you're included in that too.<\/p>\n

    You are welcome.<\/p>\n

    You have a place.<\/p>\n

    You have a house.<\/p>\n

    And this house is the heart of God.<\/p>\n
