Gospel of the Day – John 21:1-19

“After this Jesus appeared again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias; and expressed himself like this:

There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas, called Didymus, and Nathanael, who was from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.

Simon Peter said to them: I am going to fish. They say to him: We also go with you. They went and got into the boat straight away, and that night they caught nothing.

And when it was morning, Jesus appeared on the beach, but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus therefore said unto them, Children, have you anything to eat?

They said to him, No. And he said to them, Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find it. So they threw it, and they could no longer take it out, through the multitude of fish.

Then that disciple, whom Jesus loved, said to Peter: It is the Lord. And when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girded himself with his tunic (for he was naked) and cast himself into the sea.

And the other disciples went with the boat (for they were not far from the land but almost two hundred cubits), carrying the net full of fish.

As soon as they went down to land, they saw coals there, and a fish placed on top, and bread. Jesus said to them: Bring some of the fish that you have now caught.

Simon Peter went up and pulled the net ashore, full of one hundred and fifty-three large fish, and there were so many, the net did not break.

Jesus said to them: Come, eat. And none of the disciples dared to ask him: Who are you? knowing it was the Lord. So Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, as well as the fish.

And it was now the third time that Jesus revealed himself to his disciples, after he had risen from the dead.
And after they had eaten, Jesus said to Simon Peter:

Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me more than these? And he replied: Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him: Feed my lambs.

He said to him again a second time: Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me? I said to him: Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him: Feed my sheep.

He said to him the third time: Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me? Simon was saddened because he said to him the third time: Do you love me? And he said to him:

Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him: Feed my sheep.

Truly, truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked wherever you wanted; But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will gird you and carry you where you do not want to go.

And he said this, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, Follow me.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through belief in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10:17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
