Gospel of the Day – Matthew 6:1-8

“Beware of doing your alms before men, to be seen by them; in fact, you will have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.

Therefore when you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be glorified by men. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward.

But when you give alms, let your left hand not know what your right hand is doing;

So that your alms may be given in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you publicly.

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they delight in praying standing in the synagogues, and on the corners of the streets, to be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward.

But you, when you pray, enter your closet and, closing your door, pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you publicly.

And when praying, do not use vain repetitions, like the Gentiles, who think that no matter how much they speak they will be heard.

Therefore, do not resemble them; because your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through belief in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10:17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
