“And King Herod heard this (for the name of Jesus had become known), and said, John, he who baptized, is risen from the dead, and therefore these wonders work in him.

Others said: It is Elijah. And others said: He is a prophet, or like one of the prophets.

But Herod, when he heard this, said, This is John, whom I had beheaded; rose from the dead.

For Herod himself had ordered John to be arrested and confined in prison for the sake of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her.

For John said to Herod: It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife. And Herodias spied on him, and wanted to kill him, but she could not.

For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man; and he guarded him safely, and did many things, attending to him, and listening to him willingly.

And a favorable time came, when Herod, on his birthday, gave a supper to the great ones, and tribunes, and princes of Galilee,

The daughter of Herodias herself came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and those who were with him at the table. Then the king said to the girl: Ask me for whatever you want, and I will give it to you.

And he swore to him, saying: Whatever you ask of me I will give you, up to half of my kingdom. And when she went out, she asked her mother: What shall I ask? And she said: The head of John the Baptist.

And he entered quickly and asked the king, saying: I want you to give me immediately the head of John the Baptist on a plate.

And the king was very grieved; however, because of the oath and those who were with him at the table, he did not want to deny it.

And the king immediately sent the executioner, and ordered John's head to be brought there. And he went and beheaded him in prison;

And he brought the head on a plate, and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

When his disciples heard this, they went and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through belief in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10:17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
