Gospel of the Day – Mark 5:1-20

“They crossed the sea and went to the region of the Gerasenes.
When Jesus disembarked, a man with an unclean spirit came out of the tombs to meet him.

This man lived in the tombs, and no one could restrain him, not even with chains;

for he had often been chained hand and foot, but he had broken the chains and broken the irons of his feet.

No one was strong enough to overpower him. Night and day he went screaming and cutting himself with stones among the tombs and on the hills.

When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him,
and he cried out in a loud voice: “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I pray to God that you do not torment me! “

For Jesus had said to him: “Come out of this man, you unclean spirit! ”
Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name? “My name is Legion,” he replied, “because we are many.”

And he begged Jesus, insistently, not to order them to leave that region. A large herd of pigs was grazing on a nearby hill.

The demons begged Jesus: “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.”

He gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs. The herd of about two thousand pigs threw themselves down the cliff, towards the sea, and drowned in it.

Those who tended the pigs fled and told these facts in the city and in the fields, and the people went to see what had happened.

When they approached Jesus, they saw the man there who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

Those who had seen him told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man, and they also talked about the pigs.

Then the people began to beg Jesus to leave their territory. When Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged him to let him go with him.

Jesus did not allow it, but said: “Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how he has had mercy on you.”

Then, that man went away and began to announce in Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. Everyone was amazed.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through belief in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10:17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
