He was given the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened it and found the place where it was written:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He sent me to proclaim liberty to the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to set the oppressed free.

and proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then he closed the book, handed it back to the assistant, and sat down. In the synagogue everyone had their eyes fixed on him;

and he began to say to them, “Today the Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

Everyone spoke well of him, and were amazed at the gracious words that fell from his lips. But they asked, “Is this not the son of Joseph? “

Jesus said to them, “Of course you will quote me this proverb: 'Physician, heal yourself! ' Do here in your land what we heard you did in Capernaum.”

He continued: “I tell you the truth: No prophet is accepted in your land.

I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when heaven was closed for three and a half years, and there was a great famine throughout the land.

However, Elijah was not sent to any of them, except to a widow from Zarephath, in the region of Sidon.

There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; Yet none of them were cleansed: only Naaman the Syrian.”

Everyone in the synagogue was furious when they heard this.

They got up, drove him out of the city and took him to the top of the hill on which the city was built, in order to throw him down the cliff.

But Jesus passed between them and withdrew.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through belief in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10:17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
