Gospel of the Day – Luke 15:1-3; 11-32

“And all the tax collectors and sinners came to him to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying: This one receives sinners, and eats with them. And he proposed this parable to them, saying:

Jesus continued: “A man had two sons. The youngest said to his father: 'Father, I want my share of the inheritance'. So he divided his property among them.

“Not long after, the youngest son gathered together everything he had, and went to a distant region; and there he wasted his wealth by living irresponsibly.

After he had spent everything, there was a great famine throughout that region, and he began to be in need. So he went to work with one of the citizens of that region, who sent him to his field to look after pigs.

He wanted to fill his stomach with the carob pods that the pigs ate, but no one gave him anything. “Coming to his senses, he said: 'How many of my father's employees have food to spare, and here I am, starving!

I will set out on my way and return to my father, and I will say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; Treat me like one of your employees.'

Then he got up and went to his father. “While he was still far away, his father saw him and, full of compassion, ran to his son and hugged and kissed him. “The son said to him:

'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' “But the father said to his servants, 'Hurry! Bring your best clothes and dress in it. Put a ring on your finger and shoes on your feet.

Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a party and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; He was lost and is found.' And they started to celebrate.

“Meanwhile, the eldest son was in the field. As he approached the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was happening.

He answered him: 'Your brother has returned, and your father killed the fatted calf, because he received him back safe and sound'. “The eldest son was filled with anger and would not go in. Then his father came out and urged him.

But he answered his father: 'Look! All these years I have worked like a slave in your service and have never disobeyed your orders. But you never gave me even a goat to celebrate with my friends.

But when that son of yours, who squandered your wealth with prostitutes, returns home, you kill the fatted calf for him! '
“The father said, 'My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.

But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and came back to life, he was lost and is found' “.

The Importance of the Gospel of the Day

As Christians, we place a high value on God’s Word. It is through belief in the Word of God that we are saved (Rm 10:17). The Word of God then becomes our guide for life in all circumstances, whether in employment, in social life or even in the family circle. Our aspiration should be to live by the Word of God.
